The Centre’s new National Policy on Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R), 2007, and the proposed amendments to the 1894 Land Acquisition Act must be lauded. The policy and the amended law — clearly a response to the spate of agitations across the country against various government attempts to acquire land for industrial development — would surely render the Indian modernisation process more inclusive and transparent.
